October celebrates two of nature's most colorful birthstones: opal and tourmaline. Opals mesmerize with their signature play of color, formed when silica gel fills rock crevices. Ancient Romans prized them above all other gems, while Aboriginal legends tell of opals forming where the Creator's rainbow footsteps touched Earth. Tourmaline offers one of the widest color ranges of any gem species, from vivid pinks and greens to blues and dramatic blacks. Named from the Sinhalese "toramalli" meaning "stone with mixed colors," tourmaline even has unique electrical properties. The famous "Caesar's Ruby" in Russia's crown jewels was later identified as tourmaline, showcasing this gem's ability to rival the finest rubies. Our October collection celebrates both gems' spectacular color and individuality.
