Environmental Policy
The team at Corey Egan, LLC believes that sustainability isn’t an all-or-nothing practice. Having a positive impact on our environment comes from one good choice at a time.
We believe in crafting products to be worn and loved for a lifetime, and in being mindful of the materials and processes we use to create them.
We seek to deepen our understanding of the jewelry industry’s impact on the environment so we can make conscious choices to lessen that impact. In this way, we believe we can be a model for how our industry can—and should—evolve.
How is Corey Egan, LLC incorporating sustainability into our core business values?
THROUGH OUR PRODUCTS
As a product business, we’re only as good as what we’re made of.
We are as intentional about our choice of materials as we are about the design and lifespan of our work.
1. CREATE PRODUCTS TO BE WORN AND LOVED FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE
Our jewelry is created using precious metals and old world craftsmanship meant to stand the test of time. It is our hope that your pieces will be worn, loved, and passed down through the generations.
2. COMMITTED TO USING ETHICALLY SOURCED MATERIALS
OUR METALS
Almost 80% of existing gold is already in the form of jewelry, gold bars, and electronics. It’s a no-brainer for us to use recycled metals from this existing supply to mitigate the harmful effects of new mining. (And to encourage you to recycle your own!)
Our precious metals come from companies certified by the third party SCS Global Services to offer 100% Recycled content in their precious metals.
OUR DIAMONDS
All of our diamonds are Kimberly Process certified as conflict-free. We elect to use recycled and Canadian mined diamonds throughout our jewelry collection.
For our bridal collection, we encourage the use of recycled, antique or post-consumer diamonds as an alternative to newly mined gems. These diamonds have been repurposed from old jewelry, inspected and re-polished to their highest potential, and require no new mining efforts to create your new jewelry.
THROUGH OUR ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICES
The following five environmental principles act as a compass for our business decisions and studio practices.
1. MINIMIZING OUR FOOTPRINT BY REDUCING, REUSING AND RECYCLING
We strive to reduce, reuse and recycle wherever possible in our studio practices. We aim for zero waste by recycling all resources such as paper, plastics, cardboard, glass, and aluminum as well as composting all food and plant discards.
We reduce waste by eliminating disposable products such as single-serve water bottles and shopping bags. We make efforts to reuse all shipping supplies and jewelry packaging. We also encourage our customers to reuse our jewelry boxes and pouches.
2. ELIMINATE SERIOUS TOXINS THROUGHOUT OUR PRODUCTION AND PACKAGING
We reduce the use of toxic materials to protect employee health and the environment. Specifically, we only purchase cleaning products accepted on SFApproved.org, Green Seal Certified or products with an 8.1 rating or above on Good Guide. We avoid purchasing toxic substances and any chemicals in aerosol cans. We take all measures to dispose of hazardous materials safely.
3. PURCHASE ENVIRONMENTALLY PREFERABLE PRODUCTS
All paper products are composed of a minimum 50% post-consumer waste (PCW) and are chlorine free, including printer paper, marketing materials, business cards, paper towels, boxes and packaging. Our promotional materials are printed using low-VOC or vegetable-based inks.
4. CONSERVE ENERGY, WATER AND NATURAL RESOURCES
We conserve fossil fuels and other resources by promoting the use of public transportation, using energy conserving software, and unplugging our equipment when not in use. Our studio is lit with energy efficient LED and CFL lamps, and low wattage halogen lightbulbs. We encourage water conservation in all studio practices.
Our main materials — precious metals — are resources we can conserve and recycle as well. We refine all precious metal dust, scraps, and old jewelry so it can be reintroduced to the global supply to reduce the need for more mining.
5. ACTIVELY PURSUE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF OUR IMPACT AND HOW TO REDUCE IT
We aim to research and understand the impact of our industry on the environment and seek out ways to consciously reduce it. We are excited to seek out new partnerships within our industry that encourage transparency of the supply chain. We hope to forge new relationships that make fully traceable mine-to-market gemstones a reality.
